The California prison system began with a large wooden hulled ship floating in the San Francisco Bay back in 1851. The 30 inmates on board were used as labor to build the San Quentin State Prison.

The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) has roughly 30,000 officers and 31 prisons throughout the state. A California inmate search is possible but you will need to know the inmate's number or last name. Using the last name you can narrow down your search by entering the first name and possibly middle initial of the inmate.

California inmate recently admitted into the prison system or in transit may not be available on the database for a unspecified length of time.
